JacksonwasbornininWestVirginia.Asayoungman,heenteredWestPointMilitaryAcademy（西点军校）,fromwhichhegraduatedinnearthetopofhisclass.

Aftergraduation,JacksonfoughtintheMexicanWar.Hequicklyroseinrankfromcaptain（上尉）tomajor（上校）.ThenhebecameaninstructorattheVirginiaMilitaryInstitute.WhentheCivilWarstarted,Jacksonwasmadeacolonel（上校）inthearmyoftheSouth.Hedidsowellascolonelthathebecameabrigadegeneral（准将）.

Jackson’sabilitytoinspire（激励，鼓舞）troopstoactsofendurance（忍耐力，持久力）andheroism（英勇行为）ledtodefeatsofUnionforcessometimestwiceaslargeashisown.AttheBattleofBullRunin,itwassaidthatJacksonandhismen“stoodlikeastonewall”againsttheenemy.Fromthatpointon,ThomasJacksonwasknownasStonewallJackson.

Inbattleafterbattle,Jacksonoutsmarted（以智取胜）thearmiesoftheNorth.In,byacleverflank（侧翼）movement,hedefeatedGeneralHooker’sarmyatChancellorsville,Virginia.OnMay2,intheeveningofhisvictory,Jacksonandafewofhismenwerereturningtotheircampfromatriptolearnmoreabouttheenemy’sposition.Theywerefiredonbytheirownsoldiers,whomistakenlythoughttheywerespiesfromHooker’sarmy.Jacksonwasseriouslywounded.HediedonMay10.

Inmodernwars,whensoldiersareaccidentallykilledbytheirownside,theyarereportedashavingdiedfromfriendlyfire.GeneralStonewallJacksonwasavictim（受害者）offriendlyfire.
